Gynecology: HPV Vaccination
The HPV vaccine is available through our offices for any of our patients who wish to receive it.
The vaccine is administered as a series of three doses over a period of six months. At present the vaccine is approved for women in these groups:
- Girls at ages 11 to 12, or after age 9 if desired
- Young women at ages 13 to 26 who have not already received the vaccine
- The vaccine is recommended for any young woman who plans to become sexually active
There are numerous types of Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) which can cause medical problems in people. In healthy people the virus remains in one’s body for periods ranging from several months (in teenagers and young adults) to several years in older adults. The virus may be problematic longer in women who are cigarette smokers or who have chronic medical conditions, particularly those which might suppress the immune system.
The present HPV vaccine provides immunization against select types of HPV which are most strongly associated with development of cervical cancer. This vaccine appears to be effective in 85% or more of women who receive the full series of vaccinations.
