Obstetrics: Problems During Pregnancy
There are a number of factors which may make a woman’s pregnancy “high risk”.
Some women have medical conditions which may complicate their pregnancy. At other times an inherited condition or “family medical problem” may affect the health of a woman or her baby. A woman’s age is no longer considered a specific risk in pregnancy, but as a woman becomes older it becomes more likely that medical conditions or family medical problems may develop during her pregnancy. Twin pregnancies are medically more complicated than pregnancies involving only one baby. In other cases, a problem may arise in the way a pregnancy develops or in the way a woman’s body reacts to a pregnancy; these problems may affect the baby directly or may create a risk of premature delivery.
Our providers have had extensive experience in managing such “high risk” pregnancies. Your pregnancy care will include comprehensive management of any medical issue which might arise, including these types of problems:
- Blood pressure disorders including Hypertension or pregnancies which have been complicated by Pre-Eclampsia (“Toxemia”)
- Diabetes arising in pregnancy or diabetes which has been diagnosed before pregnancy.
- Twin pregnancy
- Thyroid conditions
- Heart conditions
- Asthma and related conditions
- Epilepsy
- Blood disorders or blood clotting disorders
- Inherited medical conditions
- Premature labor or delivery in a prior pregnancy
- “Incompetent cervix” and related conditions
- Previous operations on the uterus
- Prior pregnancies which have ended in miscarriage or in a stillbirth
